8 Ideas for Stay at Home Moms to Make Money
Hey mama, are you a stay at home mom looking for ways to make money? Did you know that there are tons of ways you can generate an income from the comfort of home? Keep reading to learn about these awesome ideas for stay at home moms to make money. Perfect for saving extra for the upcoming holiday season! Here we go:
1.) Start an Online Business
This one might seem overwhelming at first but it’s very easy and pretty inexpensive to start your own home business. Think about what your passions and hobbies are, if you’re an expert or enthusiast on a particular subject, then create a business from here.
Here are some examples of service-based home businesses:
- Social media management, like being a Pinterest manager
Here are some examples of product-based businesses:
- Selling digital products like printables, recipes, ebooks
- Selling physical goods like apparel, home goods, electronics
- Flipping flea market items (here’s an awesome resource to look into)
For a service-based business, you can start a website very easily using WordPress. First, pick a business name and domain name. Then, get hosting (we recommend Bluehost, starts at $2.95/month), connect WordPress and you’re done!
Once your site is set up, you can write an About page which talks about your business, why you started, what your goals are, etc. You can put up a services page, which will go over pricing, packages, etc. And, fully set up your site. Then you’ll be ready for customers!
For a product-based business, we highly recommend you use Shopify. You can create a Shopify store easily in 30 minutes or less. Then, add your products, your theme, etc.
As a former multi-store owner, I cannot speak more highly about Shopify. They have everything you’ll ever need, on their platform
- An app store full of free and paid apps to help you get customers, source products, manage marketing, grow your social networks, and more.
- Multiple ways to accept payment from customers.
- A fully outfitted theme store and more.
You will love Shopify! With plans starting at $14/month, you can’t go wrong.
2.) Start a blog
Yes, bloggers do make money! I read about one who makes $100K+ per month (yes, per month) and she teaches her strategy as a side gig. Another one does $5K to $7K per month as a new blogger and busy mama, thanks to Amazon. There are many more bloggers earning a healthy income from their blog.
You can too!
Step 1.) You’ll pick a domain name and blog name
Step 2.) You’ll purchase hosting and domain (Bluehost is really awesome, and affordable)
Step 3.) You’ll connect WordPress (super easy using the company above and their 1-Click WordPress installation)
Step 4.) Design and launch your blog
You can do all 4 steps in under an hour. Once you have your blog set up, you’ll add content (blog posts), make money and be on your way to a full time blogger.
Here are some resources to check out to help you along your blogging journey:
3.) Start a dog walking business
Wait. Don’t roll your eyes. This opportunity is perfect for pet lovers. It’s a lot of fun and might not even feel like work. You’d be surprised how many pet owners don’t have time to walk their dogs. To outsource this chore to a professional would be amazing, in their eyes.
Launch a website, advertise, get clients, walk dogs. As your business grows, you can even outsource the dog walking.
4.) Start a childcare or babysitting business
Your kids will make friends, you’ll have a home business that can be very lucrative, if I’m being honest. My sister in law did this and was charging $1,600/month for one child! Imagine having 5 little ones in your home to keep your child busy.
$1,600 * 5 kids = $8,000/month
Can you imagine! You’ll be doing a lot of the same tasks you’d be doing for your little ones anyway: daily activities, preparing lunch and snacks, naptime, etc.
A lot of moms do this. Think about it.
5.) Become an Affiliate Marketer
Affiliate marketing works like this: you promote products and for each successful sale, you earn a commission.
So, if you are referring a $100 product with 20% commission, you’ll earn $20 per sale
Consider you make 5 sales a week, 5 sales * $20=$100/week or $400/month
The above example is considering just one product. Think bigger. If you were promoting multiple products with differing commissions, you can make a full time income.
How to become an affiliate marketer?
First, get a website. A website is not required but it’s easier if you have one, in my opinion. Follow the steps from #2 above to create a content site or blog.
Now that you’ve got your site, join affiliate networks. Here are our favorites:
- Amazon Associates
Joining is free and once you are a member, you can pick which merchants to promote. Then, you’ll promote on your website, in social media, to your email list, to friends/family, etc. And, get paid.
Need more of a hand holding in this?
Take a look at this affiliate marketing training which shows you how to make money as an affiliate marketer. The author earns $50K+ per month just from affiliate marketing. After I took her training, my affiliate sales increased by ten times!
6.) Retail Arbitrage
This involves taking advantages of price differences in the market to make a profit. It’s a lot simpler than it sounds.
Think about this: You see a coffee maker on eBay for $10. That same coffee maker sells on Amazon for $20. So, you buy it from eBay for $10, sell it on Amazon for $20 and you just made a $10 profit.
Tons of people are doing this and it’s working.
Why would people buy at your higher price? Well, some people are loyal to specific marketplaces. You have those Amazon fans that will only buy from Amazon. You have die-hard Best Buy customers that will only buy their electronics from Best Buy.
This is with everything. It’s called brand loyalty. Also, people can be lazy. If you’re like me, before every purchase decision, you check out 5 or 6 other outlets to see where you get the best price, who has cheapest shipping, fastest shipping, most reviews, closest to my house, etc. Then, you start scouting coupons. It’s a whole process with me. But that’s just me. Doing this takes a lot of time. Some folks don’t have time for it. They have no time and/or they’re lazy and ready to buy what they need that is right in front of them.
Try this out. I did this last year around the holidays and made a nice side hustle income.
7.) Playing around on apps
What? Get paid by apps. Yes! If you haven’t read our Load Your Cell Phone with these Money Making Apps article, check it out.
In a nutshell, there are apps that pay you to do tasks.
What are the tasks?
They can be simple things like doing an online survey or more complex, like heading to your local grocer and snapping a photo of the coffee aisle.
My favorite apps are the ones I can do laying in bed.
Imagine, working on these little apps in your spare time and making money. You control how much or how little your earn, all from your cell phone.
Here are some awesome ones you’ll love:
- Survey Savvy
- Survey Junkie
I get around $30 in daily offers emailed to me. If I did those everyday, it would take an hour or so probably and I’d make around $210/week or $840/month. This is great to do in addition to any other work from home job you do. Try it out.
8.) Become a transcriptionist
You listen to audio files and type what is said. If you are a fast typist and a strong listener, this might be right for you. You can earn up to $25/hour.
Sign up, then once you are approved and ready to take jobs, you’ll pick and choose what jobs you want to work, from a queue. Work those jobs, get paid!
One company pays you weekly, on Mondays, via PayPal.
